Drake was one of those schools, preserving on the stadium facade a reminder of a conference relationship from an earlier era of Husker athletics.

The medallion reproduces Drake’s historic university seal, with “Drake University” around the perimeter and the founding year 1881 below. At its center are an open book, a lamp, and rays of light, accompanied by “Veritas,” the Latin word for “Truth.” Drake still uses these elements in its official university seal today.

Drake was founded in Des Moines in 1881 and named for Francis Marion Drake, a Civil War general, former Iowa governor, banker, attorney, and major early benefactor of the university.

Take Home

Drake University concrete seal medallion

Part of Memorial Stadium’s Missouri Valley Conference medallion series

Features Drake’s 1881 founding date

Includes the historic “Veritas” seal imagery

Architectural piece removed directly from Memorial Stadium
